DURBAN PASSION PLAY 2000 (article first published : 2000-03-19)

Every five years since 1952, the powerful story of the betrayal, trial, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus has been portrayed by the Durban Catholic Players Guild in the Durban Passion Play. Last staged in 1997, when it was moved from the Durban City Hall to the Playhouse, the play is a unique expression of Christian faith which this year celebrates 2,000 years since the birth of Christ.

The Durban Catholic Players Guild is privileged to be the only organisation in the world to have been granted permission to base their script and costumes on those of the Bavarian Passion Play of Oberammergau. Over the years, the script has been adapted and abridged to ensure accessibility to contemporary audiences. With its Passion Play 2000 campaign, the Guild is amending its production sequence so that every second season of the Durban play will run concurrently with the Oberammergau version.

Involving a cast and crew of over 200, including Derrick O’Toole and Robin Paul (alternating as the Christus), Anita Lavoipierre (Madonna), Michael Ribeiro (Pontius Pilate) and Dominic Sandiah (Judas), the play is expected to draw thousands of people to Durban from all over Africa and beyond.

Durban Passion Play runs in the Playhouse Drama from April 1 to 23. Performances are Tuesday to Sunday at 19h00 with matinees on Saturdays and Sundays at 15h00. There are extra Good Friday (April 21) performances at 10h00 and 15h00. Tickets R15 to R40. Book at Computicket or, for credit card bookings, Dial-A-Seat on (031) 369-9444 or call TicketLine on (031) 304 2753.

Block bookings offer 10% discount (minimum 20 tickets) or 20% discount (minimum 50 tickets). Entire performances can be bought for fundraising purposes at R11 600. Contact Mala on (031) 369-9448.
