ALLAN HAGAN COMES HOME (article first published : 2004-10-7)

Varekai Productions, a New York City based theatrical production company, has chosen Durban as its new permanent base of productions.

Born and raised in Durban, Managing Director, Allan J. Hagan makes his return home after being abroad for 10 years where he spent one year in London and nine years in New York.

Durban audiences may remember Hagan who, with his first business partner, Janine Dovey, under the banner of Toucan Productions, staged the highly successful productions, Caring Kim, later staged by the Natal Playhouse Loft Company and the award winning It’s Our World Too, which won the Standard Bank Literary Award for Best Script.

Allan Hagan has also appeared in various productions for The Natal Playhouse Company, such as Show Boat, Oliver, Romeo and Juliet as well as in Twelfth Night at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, to name a few.

Gary Adamsen, a Broadway actor, producer and production stage manager, takes the reigns as artistic director. Adamsen has worked on such acclaimed hits as The Phantom of the Opera, City of Angels, Little Shop of Horrors, Love Letters with Annie Potts, Guys & Dolls, West Side Story, the international smash CHESS and the Tony Award winning PROOF. The EMMY and UPTA Award wining Adamsen will make a permanent move to Durban as well.

Hagan and Adamsen aim to transform the South African theatre scene, in particular drawing attention to Durban, by creating Broadway and West End calibre theatrical events, utilising an entire South African cast, crew and production staff. Varekai Productions will also invite internationally known stars to headline musical productions and concert events.

While in New York City, Varekai Productions worked in conjunction with INBOND Management. Inbond Management is a New York based talent Management Company. Together, Varekai Productions and Inbond Management will function domestically and internationally, opening the doors for the untapped South African talent.

“This has been a long time dream in the making and we feel the timing is right for Varekai Productions to base itself in Durban,” says Allan Hagan. South Africa has now reached it 10th year of freedom and with that comes new dreams and goals, not just nationally but internationally as well. Its time to introduce South Africa and all it has to offer to the world and bring the world to South Africa.”

Both Gary Adamsen and Allan Hagan will arrive in Durban on the October 21 for a two-week stay to establish permanent offices and to meet all interested parties who are to be involved with this project.
