KICKSTART (article first published : 2000-03-5)

Well-known actor, designer, cartoonist and puppeteer Greg King has decided to form a new theatre company to get upmarket Durban audiences back into the theatre. Titled KickstArt, it will offer fresh productions of internationally acclaimed playscripts featuring top local actors and actresses.

“We intend to make a classy night out at the theatre a more regular event in Durban people’s diaries,” explains actor Greg King who recently completed a long run in the Playhouse Cellar of the highly popular adult pantomime Jack and the Big Stalk.

KickstArt will be based at the charming and intimate Kwasuka Theatre in Greyville and will link up with Bean Bag Bohemia which is close by and famous for its extraordinary parties, exceptional menu and home to Durban’s arts-smart in crowd.

KickstArt’s first show will be a new production of Ben Elton’s cutting-edge comedy-thriller Popcorn which opened in London’s West End in 1997. The first South African production ran, to huge acclaim, for over eight months in Gauteng, Cape Town and Pretoria. Sadly, as is often the case, the production never reached Durban.

KickstArt’s production of Popcorn will open on May 13 at Kwasuka Theatre. Each new production will tour to the Hexagon Theatre in Pietermaritzburg. More details from Greg King on (031) 201-4395 or 083 544-2006.
