CATALINA GETS CROOKED (article first published : 2004-09-16)

From the writer of the multi-award winning War Cry and co-creator of the smash hit Green Mamba comes a ripping new black comedy Crooked which opens at the Catalina Theatre on September 28, after its appearance at the Witness Hilton Arts Festival.

Hugely satirical and darkly hilarious, Crooked, was first showcased at Artscape's Arena Theatre in Cape Town (2002) and is described by theatrical heavyweight Roy Sargeant as "The funniest new South African script since Glass Roots."

“Crooked is essential viewing for anybody who has been robbed, burgled, kidnapped, ripped off or schnaaied,” says the publicity notes. “You may not be able to prevent them from pillaging your wallet and cell phone, but at least this time you get to laugh while they're doing it!”

Three deliciously incompetent criminals have abducted a wealthy senior citizen and eagerly await the delivery of a suitcase of money. Leonard Hamilton-Pike, a spectacular underachiever with delusions of criminal grandeur; Selina Gibson prone to outbursts of Woody Allenesque proportions and by her own admission, "could be slightly mad." And finally, the lovable Mlu Mtwawuli who finds himself in the middle of an identity crisis after being snubbed by the recent census.

This unlikely threesome find their best-laid plans derailed by the arrival of Professor Devries, a mysterious local academic who promptly hires himself as the group's kidnapping consultant. What follows is a roller coaster ride of bluffing and double bluffing, strange twists and U-turns.

Written and directed by John van de Ruit, Crooked stars Michael Gritten (King Kong, Popcorn), Tim Wells (Copenhagen, War Cry), Claire Cassidy (Rocky Horror Picture Show) and Dominic Fundam (Master Harold ... and the Boys.)

Crooked runs at the Catalina Theatre: Wilsons Wharf, from September 28 to October 17. Shows Tuesday to Saturdays at 20h00 (Sundays at 18h00).

Tickets R65 (R55 concessions). Special offer of two for the price of one every Tuesday and Wednesday. Book at 031 305 6889. For schools or block bookings phone John on 084 723 0822.

NB: The play contains scenes of violence that may offend sensitive viewers. (PG 14)
