OEDIPUS REX (article first published : 2004-08-13)

One of the world’s classic tragedies, Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, comes to life on a local stage this month in a striking new production mounted by the Department of Drama at the Durban Institute of Technology (DIT).

Directed by Alan Auld and featuring DIT students, this opens at 19h00 on August 21at the Courtyard Theatre in Mansfield Road, where it will run for a week.

Convenient performances times have been chosen from August 23 to 27 at 16h30 with the final two performances on August 28 at 16h30 and 19h00.

“Subtitled The Rise and Fall of an Honourable Man, the play traces the archetypal story of a man who follows through the consequences of actions he himself has willfully set in motion,” says Auld who is staging the classic Greek drama in modern dress, with his students appearing in denim and black jeans.

The gripping action centres on Oedipus who was doomed from birth to the horror of unknowingly killing his father, Creon, and marrying his mother, Jocasta.

Derived from one of the world’s most famous myths, the play occupies a pivotal place in world drama to this day, some 2,400 years after it was written. It has exerted a considerable influence on literary writing, philosophical speculations and psychological thinking through the ages, and has been translated into opera and ballet amongst other media.

Tickets R30 (R15 students) and booking is through Computicket 011 340 8000.
