DANGEROUS LIAISONS (article first published : 2004-08-13)

Following its run at the Kwasuka Theatre, Dangerous Liaisons moves to the Hilton College Theatre for two performances next weekend. Presented by Art for Africa and KickstArt, the production is set in pre-Revolutionary France. Christopher Hamptonís brilliant tale of sexual betrayal, treachery and intrigue is the original play based on the novel by Choderlos du Laclos on which the films Dangerous Liaisons and later Cruel Intentions were based.

This production is directed by Steven Stead and features Clare Mortimer (Best Actress Durban Theatre Awards 2003) Steven Stead and Belinda Henwood (both Best Actor VITA winners) supported by a first rate cast, designed and co-directed by Greg King (Best Director / Producer Durban Theatre Awards 2003) and with costume designs by Terrence Bray. The cast is Steven Stead playing the plum role (John Malkovich in the screen version); Belinda Henwood (playing the role Michele Pheiffer played); Clare Mortimer (playing Glenn Closeís fabulous role of the Marquise); Vera Clare (as Stevenís aunt - Madame de Rosemonde); Neil Coppen as Danceny (played by Keanu Reeves); Bryan Hiles plays Azolan Ė Stevenís man servant, and Phillipa Savage plays Cecileís mother. The two exciting rising stars are Josette Eales who plays the courtesan Emilie and Janna Ramos Violante who plays 15 year old Cecile who Steven seduces (this was Uma Thurmanís screen debut). Also in the cast are Carol Trench, Donnaugh Roberts, Alison Cassels and Thomie Holtzhausen.
