HELLO AND GOODBYE (article first published : 2004-08-1)

Actorís Co-Op is staging Athol Fugardís poignant tragic-comedy Ė Hello and Goodbye - at the Catalina Theatre from August 13 to 22 featuring Lucy Wallace as Hester and Oded Rouche as Johnnie.

This is one of Fugardís earlier plays written and set in Port Elizabeth in the 60ís. Fugard played Johnnie and Molly Seftel played Hester in the original production in Johannesburg in 1965. Barney Simon directed. Other international actors who have performed in this articulate two-hander include Martin Sheen, Ben Kingsley and Janet Suzman.

When Fugard directed the brilliant 1974 production in London, Bill Flynn and Yvonne Bryceland starred, also appearing in Cape Town in the same year. The NAPAC Drama department staged a powerful and intimate version of it in the Loft featuring Stephen Gurney and Ingride Mollison.

This time, director Garth Anderson directs a youthful cast in this touching story of family and relationships.

Hello and Goodbye runs at the Catalina Theatre on Wilsonís Wharf from August 13 to 22 at 20h00 (Sundays at 18h00 and school performances on August 16, 17 and 19 at 13h00. Tickets R65 (R50 children and pensioners). Bookings through the Catalina and Thandeka on 031 305 6889. School bookings through Margie Coppen on 083 251 941.
