SHATTERED DREAMS (article first published : 2004-07-26)

Johannesburg-based award winning playwright and director, Julian Seleke-Mokoto of Abangani Theatre Group, will present one of his most respected and much-loved theatre works Shattered Dreams in the Playhouse Loft for a short season from July 29 to August 1.

The show stars well-known theatre and TV personalities Duma Mnembe (nominee for best lead actor for the Bloemfontein FNB Vita Regional Theatre Awards) and Dieketseng Nkosi–Mnisi. Also featured are talented young artists Sbongile Genu (a member of the original cast and a nominee for the best lead actress of the Bloemfontein FNB Vita Regional Theatre awards) and Thakane Matoni.

Shattered Dreams is a story about teenage suicide, domestic abuse and how it can lead to all sorts of turmoil. The show also highlights the importance of personal relationships. “They are as vital as the air we breathe,” says scriptwriter and director Julian. The show also provides solutions in stories of women abuse and domestic violence; with reminders that there is a possible source of help for every problem!

After a successful run at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2000 as well as the Windybrow Arts Festival, Johannesburg, in 2001 and the Civic Theatre in 2002, Shattered Dreams appeared at the National Arts Festival before its Durban run.

One of the organisers of the Stop Drama festival (a festival that encourages productions with an anti crime theme), Julian Seleke-Mokoto has written and directed several plays such as The Last Mile, Marry the unfaithful woman and many more. Most of his productions have performed as part of the Fringe Festival at the National Arts Festival and some have been enjoyed by audiences in Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia.

Shattered Dreams was the FNB Vita Regional Awards winner of the 2001/2002 best Script of a new South African Play.

Performances take place in the Playhouse Loft from July 29 to August 1at 19h30 with a Friday matinee at 14h00 as a special performance for schools. Bookings are advised to avoid disappointment!! Schools can contact Smangele on 083 5111 407.
