HANSEL AND GRETTEL (article first published : 2004-07-10)

The multi award winning theatre company, The Actors Co-operative, will perform the all new Hansel And Grettel and Rapunzel (Tales From The Brothers Grimm programme two), sequel to its delightful Tales From The Brothers Grimm in Durbanís Botanic Gardens for the last two weeks of the July Holidays.

Hansel And Grettel and Rapunzel (Tales From The Brothers Grimm programme two) is aimed at those children who enjoyed the first Tales From The Brothers Grimmas well as a whole new generation of five to ten year-olds who have not yet had the good fortune to have seen this very special piece of childrenís theatre.

The fun-filled new play is performed by Nondumiso Tembe and Oded Rouche.

Nondumiso is at present on Summer vacation from her studies in New York. No stranger to Durban audiences, her work in South Africa includes the title role in the Playhouse Companyís Annie, as well as the lead in Gcina Mhlopeís Mata-Mata. She also recently performed solo at the Sun Coast Casinoís First Birthday Celebrations.

Oded is enormously popular with young theatre lovers who remember him as the dastardly Sushi Chef in Katinka Kat in Botanic Gardens last July. Odedís other childrenís theatre credits include Brer Rabbit and Friends as well as many his appearances in the ongoing Freddy The Frog saga.

Adapted by National Vita Best Director Garth Anderson, this all new show follows the format of the Co-opís previous Play-in-the-Park productions. Adapted from Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's two most loved stories, Hansel And Grettel and Rapunzel (Tales From The Brothers Grimm programme two) uses the Co-opís combined theatrical experience, and incorporates comedy, drama, improvisation and loads of unrestrained audience participation, to give young audiences all the pleasure of a real theatre outing.

Nondumiso and Oded skillfully guide their spell-bound audiences through each immortal yarn, encouraging them not only to comment from the gallery but to get up onto the stage and improvise under the careful guidance of two expert actors.

Performances will be at Durban Botanic Gardens at 11h00, Mondays to Fridays from July 9 to 20. Cool drinks and sweets are available at the performance area. Families are encouraged to bring rugs and deck chairs to make themselves comfortable. Mosquito repellant is also advised!

A daily colouring in competition is held, with participants bringing their efforts onto the stage during the performance. Entry forms are available at all the entrances to Botanic Gardens as well as at the Information Centre.

Tickets R15 (adults and children). To book, call the Actors Co-operative's studio on 031 462 0566 or Garth on 083 439 1532.
