GURU FOR GRAHAMSTOWN (article first published : 2004-06-29)

Copy Dog Productions will present Guru - May the Farce Be with You, a rollicking comedy about the New Age movement, at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown from July 1 to 10.

Directed by KZN theatre doyenne Caroline Smart (Brutal Tunes), Guru leaves no sacred cow unpoked as actor-writer Clinton Marius takes a satirical dig at the Age of Aquarius in his recently scripted one-man comedy. This spotlights a wacky assortment of characters, roller coasting through the spiritual revolution, touting crystals, waving wands and healing loved ones, pets and dolphins.

The show ricochets through its subject matter with zany irreverence as conversations with Shirley McKleenex offering surefire advice on ‘How To Become An Expert on The New Age’ give way to inspirational tunes irresistibly rendered by Dreadlock Steve.

The highlight of the evening is the arrival of Guru to the rich and famous, Muckerjie Bhuggerwanduster Sunshine, who promises to shower his devotees with cosmic radiance as he shamelessly touts his assortment of merchandise for sale in the foyer (not least his ‘abridged’ publication, Sunshine – The Booklet of the Biography), all the while suggesting that laughter is not only the best medicine, but the best religion too.

Guru marks the second collaboration between actor Clinton Marius and director Caroline Smart, whose special bent for comedy was honed working with masters of the genre such as Tom Meehan and the legendary Springbok Radio comedy team.

Guru premiered in February at the Hexagon Studio in Pietermaritzburg, before playing Durban’s Playhouse Loft theatre during a two-week season in March.

Clinton Marius’s Grahamstown fringe appearances in Guru will be at Vicky’s festival venue. Performance dates and times are July 1 (11h30); July 2 (15h30); July 3 (22h30); July 4 (18h30); July 6 (10h00); July 7 (14h00); July 8 (20h30); July 9 (12h00); and July 10 (15h30). Advance booking is through Computicket on 011 –340 8000 or www.computicket.com
