BROTHERS GRIMM (article first published : 2004-06-29)

Multi award winning theatre company, The Actors Co-operative, will perform its delightful Tales From The Brothers Grimm in Durbanís Botanic Gardens during the July Holidays.

The production is aimed at a whole new generation of 5 to 10 year olds who have not yet had the good fortune to have seen this very special piece of childrenís theatre. Tales From The Brothers Grimm was last seen five years ago when it played sell-out seasons in Durban's Botanic Gardens, as well as in the University of Natal, Durban's Square Space Theatre.

Adapted by National Vita Best Director Garth Anderson from Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's most loved stories and performed by Anderson himself as a 45 minute solo show, Tales From The Brothers Grimm comprises the stories Little Red Cap and Ashputtel. Using his rich theatrical experience that spans a quarter of a century and incorporating comedy, drama, improvisation and loads of unrestrained audience participation, Anderson skillfully guides his spell-bound audiences through each immortal yarn. He encourages them to comment from the gallery as well as get up onto the stage and improvise under his expert guidance.

For the past ten years, The Actors Co-operative has led the field in Children's Theatre, Educational Theatre and Schools' Theatre in KZN with productions such as The Minerva Children, A Doggy's Tale, Krazy Kipling Kapers and The Totally Terrific Tale Of Katinka Kat in its repertoire.

Garth Andersonís greatest love is Children's Theatre, and last year his tireless efforts in this field were awarded with the newly established Fools' Theatre Award for his contribution to Youth Audiences.

Tales From The Brothers Grimm plays at Botanic Gardens at 11h00, Mondays through Fridays from July 1 to 20. Cool drinks and sweets are available at the performance area. Families are encouraged to bring rugs and deck chairs to make themselves comfortable. Mosquito repellant is also advised!

A daily colouring-in competition is held, with participants bringing their efforts onto the stage during the performance. Entry forms are available at all the entrances to Botanic Gardens as well as at the Information Centre. Tickets R15 (adults and children). To book, call the Actors Co-operative's studio on 031 462 0566 or Garth on 083 439 1532.
