PANSA’S WINNING PLAYS (article first published : 2004-06-6)

The winners of the PANSA UCT Festival of Reading of New Writing 2003, Mike van Graan and Guy Willoughby, are both looking forward to the first professional run of their plays.

Mike van Graan’s Green Man Flashing, the jury winner of the festival, will be on at the Fringe at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, from July 2 to 9 at the Gymnasium. Directed by Clare Stopford, the cast features Jenny Steyn, Charlotte Butler, Siyabonga Twala, Sechaba Morojele and Andre Samuels. The play deals with universal themes such as individual human rights versus the great political good, personal relationships versus political loyalties and moral responsibility for individual choices are played out against the backdrop of an election.

Guy Willoughby’s Church Full of Light: Kereke Ya Lesedi, judged the audience winner at the festival, will be produced at the Sanlam Studio by the Baxter Theatre from June 7 for a four-week run. Church Full Of Light is the strange tale of a domestic servant who inherits a sizeable fortune from her employer - and the chain of events, traumatic, comic and even providential, this event sets in motion. Located in contemporary Johannesburg as well as the far reaches of Limpopo Province, the play interrogates a host of tangled issues around identity, justice and faith in our unusual society. Direction is by Fred Abrahamse, with renowned stage-and-screen star Thoko Ntsinga, Dumisane Nebe, Anthea Thompson, Roger Dwyer and Guy Willoughby.
