THE LUNATIC THE LOVER & THE POET (article first published : 2004-06-3)

Following the sell-out successes of their previous forays into the works of William Shakespeare, at the end of the second term of 2004, the Actors Co-operative will tour its play The Lunatic, The Lover & The Poet to high Schools in and around KZN and Gauteng. Having just completed a five week season of Othello, playing to full houses in Durban, Empangeni and Hilton, the award- winning theatre company is focusing its sights again on high school audiences.

Aimed primarily at English and Drama learners in Grade 8 to Grade 11, the play serves as an introduction to the comedies and tragedies of William Shakespeare. Vastly entertaining, The Lunatic, The Lover & The Poet explores Shakespeare’s lexis on “love and lovers” and is carefully designed to present a range of Shakespeare’s themes and ideas and to make his work accessible to young people.

Using scenes from Shakespeare’s most important plays, The Lunatic, The Lover & The Poet moves seamlessly from his most intense tragedies, Hamlet and Othello, through to the immensely satisfying slapstick comedy of the Pyramus And Thisby scene from that most popular of all his plays, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Along the way, novice Shakespeare audiences are treated to the poetic beauty of the first tentative meeting of the young star-crossed lovers Romeo And Juliet and the wildly black comedy of the furious wooing of the older lovers, Kate and Petrucchio, in The Taming Of The Shrew.

At one hour in length, The Lunatic, The Lover & The Poet will be followed by an informal discussion period between learners and the director and cast.

Performances at Hilton College Theatre on June 17 and 18 at 09h00 and 11h00. Tickets R30 (one free teacher ticket per 25 pupils). Bookings on 033 383 0126.
