KWASUKA’S HAMLET (article first published : 2000-02-17)

Kwasuka Theatre starts off its busy 2000 programme with a production of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet directed by Professor Pieter Scholtz featuring a cast of leading professional actors. As the play is a setwork for matric pupils, performances are geared to school hours although there will be shows for the general public. The production will be presented at the Courtyard Theatre, Technikon Natal (Mansfield Road) from March 13 to 24 daily at 09h00 and 13h00.

The production then moves to Kwasuka Theatre for a short run from April 3 to 8 with performances at 09h00 and 19h30. The final season takes place at the Winston Churchill Theatre in Pietermaritzburg from April 11 to 14 at 09h00 and 13h00.

The Hamletcast is headed by John van de Ruit as Hamlet, Catherine Farren as Gertrude and Patrick Collyer as Claudius. Other cast members are Dennis Schauffer (Polonius), Michael Gritten (Laertes), Angela Dodds (Ophelia), Juan Burgers (Horatio) and Dominic Fundam (Rosencrantz). The play also features recent Technikon Natal drama graduates Edwin Khumalo (Gravedigger) and Momelezi Ntshiba (Guildenstern). Costumes will be designed by Jannie Engelbrecht with Hugo le Roux in charge of movement. Fight scenes and fencing will be arranged by David Spurrett.

Block bookings for schools at R15 per pupil as well as bookings for general performances through Kwasuka on (031) 309-2236.
