DEFENDING THE PLANET (article first published : 2004-05-12)

We’ve had Defending the Caveman, Defending the Cavewoman and Defending the Cave Brats. Trust the zany McIlroy/Bobbert team to go the fullest extent with their new zany show Defending the Planet.

Audiences are invited to “experience a close encounter of the third (or fourth ... or fifth) kind when Aaron McIlroy and his vivacious wife, Lisa Bobbert, join forces on stage, together for the first time in two years in what promises to be another of this well-known wacky couple’s hilarious hit musical comedies.

The story focuses on a self-help group of victims of alien abductions, formed to examine these and other close encounters of various kinds. Typical of McIlroy’s unique comedic style, Defending the Planet will discuss the trauma of victims who have been “probed” by aliens. By means of “case scenarios”, off-the-wall characters and an eclectic range of foot-stomping music, suggestions are made as to how one can deal with an “invasion” and how to avoid falling victim to these outlandish creatures!

The show is a must for anyone who has ever wondered about extra-terrestrial activity and who enjoys a entertaining evening of music and laughter.

Aaron was last seen in the musical comedy My Cousin Brother at the Lango’s Supper Theatre when he performed with Kaseran Pillay and at the Catalina in his second solo comedy show, Mr Personality. His award-winning “motivational speaking” show, The Loser still plays around the country at private functions.

Lisa Bobbert, most recently seen in Brutal Tunes at the Royal Backstage followed by Kwasuka Theatre, last performed with her husband in their musical comedy Belly Laughs, which dealt with the trials and tribulations of pregnancy and childbirth.

Defending the Planet is directed by Sue Monteregge who also co-wrote the show with Aaron McIlroy.

Defending the Planet opens at the Catalina on June 1 to run until June 27. Book at the theatre on 031 305 6889. Group bookings of 20 or more from Sharon on 083 486 3271.
