AREPP THEATRE FOR LIFE (article first published : 2004-03-28)

arepp:Theatre for Life is a dynamic, innovative and creative educational theatre organisation which has been operating nationally in South Africa since 1987. Using dramatic theatre performances, they tour nationwide, providing interactive, social life-skills education to school-going youth. arepp works in the major languages of South Africa touring in many different communities.

The focus of the performances addresses the issues inherent in sexuality and the development of self image. One educator from a school in KwaZulu-Natal said of the arepp shows, “Pupils are in a better position to deal with the pressures of their social lives, especially sexual.”

The shows are carefully crafted to highlight and encourage thought and debate around the issues of relationships, gender, discrimination, sex, pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and STI’s and all forms of abuse. The specific goal is that, through the encouragement of positive self-image, the enforcement of self-esteem and the provision of complementary information and life-skills, learners will make sound, informed lifestyle choices about what is best for them, and their society, in their particular situations.

In 2002, no less than 1,570 shows were performed in 1,119 schools reaching 324,304 under 25’s in all languages around South Africa.

arepp’s methodology lends itself to open expression and communication. An Educator from Gauteng said, “We will highly recommend arepp shows to all Educational Institutions”. We offer young people alternatives to the conventions of the socialization process we all get caught up in. We offer a forum for the real feelings expressed by young people.

arepp will be on tour in KwaZulu-Natal schools from April 22 until June 23. The theatre programmes will deal with issues of sexual abuse, parent-child relationships, delaying sexual debut and other issues.
