THE TRIAL OF HAMLET (article first published : 2000-02-4)

Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a prescribed textbook for matric students this year. Durban playwright Pravesh Hurbans has adapted the play for the Edu-theatre theatre-in-education group. While he has updated the language and restructured and modernised events, he maintains that he has stayed close to the Bard’s sense and meaning. Placed in a trial setting, student audiences are encouraged to “cross-question” Hamlet as to his motives and actions.

Titled The Trial of Hamlet, the production is currently on tour to secondary schools during February. The programme also features a workshop on another matric textbook The Mosquito Coast. More details from Pravesh Hurbans on (031) 207-8071.
