FNB UMBRELLA INTERNATIONAL COMPANIES (article first published : 2006-02-17)

This year the FNB Dance Umbrella celebrates its 18th year on the international map as a platform for works from both local and international companies. This year the festival will host two foreign companies as well two collaborative works created by South African and international artists.

Madame K is a work by Swiss choreographer Nicole Seiler. Madame K is a woman. She likes to make up. She likes to dress. She likes appearances and wishes to escape into a world of perfection. Sharing this programme is another work called Lui. This work is the male version of Madame K and is a reflection about "being or pretending", about the images we want to project. This programme will be presented at the Wits Downstairs Theatre on March 1 and 2 at 19h00. This work is presented with sponsorship assistance from Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council.

Also on March 1 and 2 in the Wits Amphitheatre at 20h15 is a new collaboration between SA choreographer Robyn Orlin and France-based dancer Sophiatou Kossoko called although I live inside ... my hair ... will always reach towards the sun ... This work is an investigation on how a white woman from Africa works together with a Black woman from Europe. This work is presented in association with the French Institute of South Africa.

Next on the programme is a new work from South African-born, France-based Vincent Mantsoe. MEN-JARO will have its world premiere at the new Johannesburg University Arts Centre on March 4 at 20h00 with a second performance on March 5 at 14h30. Men-Jaro celebrates and redefines the intrinsic relationship that exists between African contemporary dance and music. The work will feature an international ensemble of dancers, musicians playing indigenous music and a pro-active score composed by Anthony Caplan. Men-Jaro is presented by Multi-Arts Projects and Productions in collaboration with Afrique en Creations; The French Institute of South Africa; Business and Arts South Africa; the Prins Claus Fund (Holland); the Royal Netherlands Embassy via the Arts and Culture Trust and the FNB Dance Umbrella.

The fourth international work is Conjuncto di NERO, created by Italian-born, Dutch choreographer Emio Greco/PC. In Cunjuncto di NERO, the dancers, lighting and space become one, creating and ever-changing world where the dance drives the light and the light drives the dance. Brightness and darkness alternates, separating the tangible from the intangible, movement to stillness. This work is presented with assistance from the Royal Netherlands Embassy, South Africa.

The 18th FNB Dance Umbrella runs from February 24 until March 18 in various venues in Johannesburg. For a programme up-date go to www.artslink.co.za/arts
