TRACES (article first published : 2005-08-1)

Commissioned by the Playhouse Company for this year’s Women’s Arts Festival and workshopped by the Phenduka Dance Theatre, Traces is set to generate much comment in local dance circles.

Choreographed and directed by Phenduka’s award-winning artistic director, S’bonakaliso Ndaba, this new work stands as a celebration of dance while experimenting by combining different forms of movement.

Concerned with ideals of relationships of all kinds, Traces work poses the question: Why does the ideal always seem unattainable - either falling at some undefined point in our past, or floating ahead of us at some vague point in the future; a point we never truly believe we will reach? The “good old days” seemed to exist in an era that is decades or centuries away from the here and now. Did they in fact exist, or are they a fictionalisation of our lives as we wish they had been; or wish they would become?

Traces renders one ideal of ‘the good old days’ when people nurtured and cared for one other, their relationships and their communities. It follows some of the different paths that the ideal could have taken but these paths are overshadowed by flashbacks to the future which act as a gauge to remind us of how far we have strayed. Perhaps we doubt that these times ever existed at all, but this work reminds us not to give up the hope that things could be as we thought they once were, and invites us to reclaim them by our own actions.

There are three performances in the Playhouse Drama on August 6 at 14h30 and 19h30 as well as on August 7 at 14h30. Tickets pre-booked R20 and R10 (R25 and R15 at the door). There is a 10% discount for groups of 10 or more and 20% off for pensioners and children.

Booking at Computicket or the Playhouse’s Dial-a-Seat on 031 369 9555. More information on 031-369 9456 or email publicity@playhousecompany.com
