LORD OF THE DANCE (article first published : 2000-01-18)

In 1998, over 91,000 people in South Africa were thrilled by the energy, showmanship and sheer spectacle of the record-breaking Lord of the Dance. Due to public demand, Big Concerts will present the triumphant return to South Africa of the famous Celtic dance troupe in three theatre venues.

While remaining the producer, director and choreographer of his four global touring companies (200 dancers in four troupes!), Michael Flatley has made way for a team of high-calibre uniquely trained young dancers. The 42-strong team of dancers coming to South Africa will be headed by award-winning dancer Damien O'Kane (The Lord of The Dance), Daire Nolan (the original Don Dorcha, The Dark Lord) who performed opposite Michael Flatley in the 1998 tour and Bernadette Flynn who first performed the role of Saoirse, The Irish Colleen, four years ago at the age of 16. A highly successful competition dancer, she has won the World Dance Championships a staggering six times.

Lord of the Dance will be performed in the Playhouse Opera on April 11 when it will be presented in association with eTV. Other performances are at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre (February 10), the Nico Opera House in Cape Town (March 21) and the Sand Du Plessis Theatre in Bloemfontein (April 4). Book at TicketWeb. Online: www.ticketweb.co.za, phone 0861 400 500 or at selected Musica and Edgars stores nationwide. Tickets R150, R250 and R350 exclusive of TicketWeb's booking fee.
