PETER AND THE WOLF (article first published : 2005-06-21)

The Durban City Dance Company is staging a new version of the timeless ballet classic, Peter and the Wolf, at Kwasuka Theatre over the winter holidays.

This favourite work has been re-choreographed by multi-award winning dancer and choreographer Quinton Ribbonaar.

Peter and The Wolf is a tale about a little boy who lives with his grandfather close to a meadow where the dangerous and cunning wolf lives. The wolf frightens Peter's grandfather but Peter feels that he is brave enough to face any danger, "because little boy's aren't afraid of wolves!"

Russian composer Sergey Prokofiev wrote Peter and the Wolf in 1936 to introduce children to the various instruments of the orchestra. Each character in the story is represented by a different instrument, enabling children to recognise the sounds. With a cheeky little bird, a waddling duck, a pouncing cat and two hunters, making up the rest of the cast of this Children's Ballet, Peter and the Wolf has entertained audiences across the world for the past 69 years.

Durban City Dance Company presents Peter and the Wolf at the Kwasuka Theatre from July 6 to 15 at 10h00 from Monday to Friday. Tickets R35 throughout available through Computicket.

More information from Quinton on 083 712 7394 or 031 202 0827.
