YOUNG PERFORMERS TO PARIS (article first published : 2005-06-17)

Three young performers from Durban jet off to Paris on June 17 to present their new collaborative work in the French capital. They are Mlu Zondi, who is also a PANSA KZN intern Regional Coordinator; Ntando Cele and Siyanda Duma.

The new work Silhouette is an eclectic mix of dance, text, live songs, live video and performance art. It will be presented at the Centre for National Dance during Le Cargo Festival which features a line-up of young African creators.

All three are the graduates of Durban Institute of Technology (DIT) Drama Department where they majored in both Acting and Dance. Most of their previous works have been experimental as they strive to find new ways to create fresh works.

Mlu Zondi started creating works in 2000 and has performed in Switzerland where he was invited as a resident choreographer for two months. He presented work in Dance Umbrella in 2002 and was also in residency there during the festival. He has also created works that has been presented in Jomba Festival, Macufe Art Festival, NSA Gallery, ArtSPACEdurban and RedEye Art Festivals. His experimental works use dance, installations, public interventions and wacky costumes.

Ntando Cele is an actress and a creator and has presented works in Jomba Festivals, Grahamstown Art Festival and Red Eye Festivals. She has collaborated with Mlu Zondi previously and her works make strong use of text and movement. She spent two months in the United States in 2002 doing workshops on storytelling and creative movement. She currently lectures at DIT Drama Department.

Siyanda Duma is a dancer/choreographer who has worked a great deal with Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre. In 2001, he spent three months in Denmark as a resident dance student. He has created works for Jomba Festival and Red Eye Festivals. He also created work for EDGE season at the Playhouse in 2002 which featured Mlu Zondi. In 2002 he was selected as one of 10 young choreographers, including Mlu Zondi, to spend 10 days in residency during Dance Umbrella. He has performed in India and New York with Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre.

Silhouette is the first collaborative work from these three artistes. It deals with issues of relationships through the use of text, dance, installation, wacky costumes, comedy, and live video images. The work will be presented in Paris from June 22 to 24.
