DANCE UMBRELLA OPEN FOR ENTRIES (article first published : 2005-05-9)

The FNB Dance Umbrella 2006 will take place in various venues in Johannesburg from February 25 to March 18, 2006, and the organisers are inviting choreographers to enter now.

For 2006, the structure will include the Stepping Stones programme which focuses on youth and community dance groups; an open Platform for young choreographers; the New Moves programme for choreographers who are not commissioned but present a work that is selected by the Dance Umbrella committee and the Main programme which will includes commissioned work and international companies.

Choreographers who are interested in being included on New Moves will have to produce a five-minute video of the proposed work. The Dance Forum board will select up to a maximum of eight choreographers for this programme.

The FNB Dance Umbrella is also inviting applications for the Dance Forum Grant of R40,000. This grant will go towards the creation of a new work in addition to the free theatre and technical back-up that applies to entrants for the annual FNB Dance Umbrella. Applications are invited from professional South African choreographers who have been working in the industry regularly for at least the past five years. The new work that is created must be a full-length piece of one hour, and include at least four dancers. Closing date for this grant is July 1, 2005.

Choreographers who are interested in presenting a work for the FNB Dance Umbrella 2006 or who wish to apply for the Dance Forum Grant, must please call Georgina Thomson at 011 482 4140.

Closing date for the Main/New Moves and Open Platform programmes is September 16. Stepping Stones closing date is October 14.
