CHALO CINEMA (article first published : 2005-04-30)

Chalo Cinema! is a lavish production set to wow Durbanís May-time audiences at the Playhouse. Set against the colourful backdrop of the Indian film industry, the production features the Nateshwa Dance Company with a cast headed by comedy man, Afzal Khan, and versatile actress Jayloshini Naidoo who is well-known for her performance in Ronnie Govenderís 1949.

Chalo Cinema! captures the glitz, glamour and grandeur of Bollywood in sizzling sequences of song, dance and comedy drama. The show opens with a tribute to Raj Kapoor, one of the greatest showmen of the film industry. The second part of the production is presented as a typical Bollywood extravaganza with large groups of dancers and musicians onstage, followed by a glimpse of life on a Bollywood film set.

Elements of spoken drama, coupled with music and dance add their own hilarious edge to the entertainment factor of this glamorous production. Snippets of dance routines being filmed, audition sessions in search of the ideal hero, along with the pampered heroines, the angry bad boys of Bollywood and the romantic lead actors, are all part and parcel of the action as the performance unrolls, giving audiences a close-up, multi-textured view of the film industry in all its facets.

Chalo Cinema! runs in the Playhouseís Drama from May 10 to 22. Evening performances at 20h00 on May 10, 13, 20 and 21. Afternoon performances at 16h00 on May 14, 15, 21 and 22. Booking is through Computicket on 083 915 8000 (online bookings at www.computicket.com), or through Dial-a-Seat on 031 369 9555.
