SPIER DEADLINE EXTENDED (article first published : 2005-04-24)

The Spier Summer Arts Season takes place annually on the Spier Estate in Stellenbosch and is organized by the Spier Arts Trust.

The Spier Arts Trust (IT4502/96) is a non-profit, financially independent cultural organisation. It was established in 1996 to administer funds raised from the corporate, private and government sectors to present cultural events. Its objectives include delivering excellence and innovation in the arts, showcasing, promoting and developing emerging South African talent, providing opportunities for collaboration with international artists and building new audiences.

Spier's stunning natural environment acts not only as a backdrop but as a source of inspiration for the Arts Season. As do the society and history of the Cape - sitting at the meeting point of two oceans and at the tip of the largest continent. The Cape has been the crossroads of the East, of the West and of the African continent.

Grand Scale performances take place in the 1,100-seater Spier Outdoor Amphitheatre which traditionally presents opera, classical music, contemporary music, musical theatre and dance. Using the setting of the Spier Farm as a giant stage, new venues are explored for site-specific theatre, theatre on location, shed theatre, street theatre, poetry/spoken word readings, cultural workshops, visual arts, film and the many crossovers between all the genres.

Companies wishing to submit proposals for performances should send invitations, background and contact information, a one-page synopsis of a proposed project, photographs and videos.

The following information must be included: Name (Artist, Band, Company); Address; Telephone; E-mail; Web-site (where possible); Bio (Artist, Band, Company); Project Title; Project Description (including running time and number of participants; attach one page if necessary); Technical Outline Needs (Please keep them simple.); Accommodation and technical needs, and Rough Budget.

Proposals should be sent for the attention of Annebelle Schreuders, Managing Director, Spier Arts Trust, PO Box 138, Lynedoch (delivery address: R310 Lynedoch, Stellenbosch, Spier Estate, De Rus Offices).
