PHILLIP STEIN GRANTS (article first published : 2005-03-21)

The FNB Dance Umbrella 2005 came to an end on March 19, with a programme that included the two commissioned works by last year’s Phillip Stein Grant recipients, Athena Mazarakis and Hlengiwe Lushaba.

The Phillip Stein Grant was previously annually presented as the Young Choreographers Grant. Since the retirement of Stein, who started the Dance Umbrella 17 years ago, these grants have been renamed in order to recognize his contribution to the development of contemporary dance in South Africa.

The two new recipients of this grant for 2005 were announced at a function held on the final evening of the festival: Durban-based Musa Hlatshwayo and Johannesburg choreographer Nelisiwe Xaba. Over the past two years, both these artists have made a mark on the contemporary dance scene in South Africa as well as internationally.

The new works that will be produced from the R15,000 grants they both receive, will premiere at the FNB Dance Umbrella 2006.
