LAUNCH OF DANCE STUDIO (article first published : 1999-11-21)

The British Council Dance Development Studio was launched at the BAT Centre last month by David Green, Director General of the British Council, and was one of the interesting events that took place during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Guests at the launch were privileged to watch a workshop led by the United Kingdom dance group Bullies Ballerinas with the township-based community group, The Alive Kids.

The successful Alive Kids community theatre-dance company, which was created by youngsters in KwaMashu, have performed in many successful dance and musical productions in South Africa as well as overseas. The company worked with RJC during its recent tour of Southern Africa and with Paddington Arts in London on a return trip to the UK.

Conducted by Pearl Jordan and Jean Jenefer Charles of Bullies Ballerinas, the workshop represented the first time the two dance groups performed together during the Commonwealth People’s Centre cultural programme. The British Council Dance Development Studio forms part of Britain and South Africa Dancing, a three year national dance development project launched in London in October.

Bullies Ballerinas is a vibrant, energetic dance company which specialises in jazz dance styles. Using a wide variety of musical and dramatic styles, Bullies aims to promote jazz dance and make it accessible to all. The company was a major hit with an ecstatic audience at A Common Wealth of Dance, a one-off programme of dance directed by choreographer Jay Pather which also took place during CHOGM.
