PLAYHOUSE SELL-OUT SUCCESS (article first published : 2005-03-3)

Amagama Amathathu and Genesis - After The Storm form part of the double bill Senior Primary Schools programme running from February 28 to March 11 2005 in the Playhouse Loft.

When the first ten shows sold out, Playhouse management quickly added an extra five shows - at 09h00 from March 7 to 11.

Artistic director of the Playhouse Company, Linda Bukhosini, said the sell-out success of the season is a clear indication of the demand for educational theatre - a demand which is being filled by the Playhouse Company and local artists.

“We are highly delighted at the phenomenal support The Playhouse Company’s arts education programme has enjoyed from schools attending the productions of Amagama Amathathu and Genesis – After the Storm,” said Bukhosini.

“It is a vital part of The Playhouse Company’s function to bring theatre to new young audiences, not only as a means of enriching their learning experience, but in terms of building future audiences for the theatre industry as a whole,” she said.

“It is especially heartening to find schools supporting productions we mount that are not specifically related to set works in the school curriculum, but that aim to get valuable messages across to learners regarding important social issues and life-skills beyond the class room parameters as well.”

Running in tandem with Amagama Amathathu and Genesis - in the Playhouse Opera, is the Actor’s Co-Operative production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, presented in association with the Playhouse Company. This has attracted a phenomenal response from school audiences, currently close to 20 000 in total.

The Playhouse Company stages schools performances throughout the year, as well as offering special concessions for scholars and students attending its mainstream public performances as well.
