LYNDA NICHOL (article first published : 2004-12-22)

A former theatre manager of the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, Lynda Nichol has been working at the prestigious Sadler's Wells in London since 2002 and in May this year, she was promoted to Operations Manager.

Born in the UK, Lynda moved to Durban in 1973 where she was educated at Durban Girl's High School and the University of Natal (now the University of KwaZulu-Natal). She worked at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre as a theatre technician from 1985 to 1988 until she moved back to the United Kingdom in 1989.

She was Stage Management Tutor at the Guildford School of Acting for the following year during which time she stage-managed Pieter Scholtz’s Samantha Seal at the Edinburgh Festival with a company of ex-UND drama students including Annie Robinson, David Bateson and Mark Faith.

Lynda moved back to South Africa in 1991 and was appointed Theatre Manager for the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, a position she held until 1997. During this time, she was awarded the Edinburgh Crystal Award for lighting designs at the Sneddon.

Then it was back again to the UK where she was appointed Theatre Manager of the Derby Playhouse. From 1998 to 2000, she worked as Company Manager on the Tap Dogs European Tour. She helped set up the 2nd European Touring company and worked with Dogs from all worldwide companies, taking in the UK, USA tour and Las Vegas companies, as well as the original and second Australian companies.

For the next two years, she worked as a freelance Company Manager on A Woman in Waiting (South Africa); Ram Vodou Band (Haiti); Birthrite (USA); Le Deux Monde (Canada); Jean Ann Ryan Productions (which involved six months on a cruise ship with three productions to South America and beyond), and a further few months touring and on corporate gigs with Tap Dogs.

In September 2002, Lynda joined Sadler's Wells as Theatre Manager for their 1,000 seat West End venue, the Peacock Theatre. Six months later she was promoted to General Manager of the Peacock and May this year saw her moving into the position of Operations Manager for Sadler's Wells.

This means that she is now responsible for the 1,500-seat Sadler's Wells Theatre and the 180-seat Lilian Baylis studio theatre as well as the Peacock.

“We are now in the middle of the busiest time of the year, with Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake playing a sell-out season at the Wells, the Snowman playing its seventh sell-out year at the Peacock, and a production of Anne of Green Gables in the Baylis. With up to seven performances a day over the three venues, I am keeping busy!” says Lynda.
