COMMON WEALTH OF DANCE (article first published : 1999-11-1)

Forming part of the cultural programme for the Commonwealth People's Centre in Durban this month, A Common Wealth Of Dance will have one performance in the Playhouse Drama November 13 at 19h00.

Presented by the Commonwealth People's Centre in association with The Playhouse Company, A Common Wealth Of Dance will be directed by Jay Pather and includes dancers and dance forms from around the Commonwealth. The production sees the appearance of Bullies Ballerinas, a six-member British dance company brought to South Africa by the British Council, as well as acclaimed kathak soloist, Vaibhav Joshi (from India) and South Africa's own, award-winning, Durban-based company, Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre.

The first part of the programme comprises a shembe dance company, a classical solo by Vaibhav Joshi, two works by Bullies Ballerinas and Forked Tongues, choreographed by Jay Pather for Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre. The themes of peace and partnership in a global society on the brink of a new millennium unfold in the final work to Ravel's stirring Bolero. This grand finale will incorporate 70 dancers, including the guest dancers as well as dancers in the gumboot, Spanish, riverdance' and garba (Indian stick dance) styles. The extravaganza of dancers together with visual projections is designed to highlight the diversity and commonality of Commonwealth member countries and their cultures as we enter the new millennium.

Tickets at R25 for A Common Wealth Of Dance can be booked at Computicket. Call Dial-Seat during office hours on (031) 369-9444 (credit card bookings) or TicketLine after hours on (031) 304-2753.
