DANCE FOR YOUTH (article first published : 2004-10-15)

On October 17, KZN Dance Link presents Dance for Youth, a large-scale youth dance performance at Godís Golden Acre, Khayelihle, in Cato Ridge.

The production is led by award-winning choreographer, Sbonakaliso Ndaba from Phenduka Dance Theatre. The piece itself features performers who are drawn from dance groups from all over KwaZulu-Natal from Cato Ridge to KwaMachi. Over 80 young people have been in rehearsal during the September school holidays for this one-off al-fresco production.

Godís Golden Acre is a beautiful estate set in the hills of Cato Ridge. It is home to around 70 young people and babies, as well as being the centre from which over 800 people are fed and supported as HIV/AIDS bites deep into families.

The open day begins with a musical welcome from the KwaZulu Natal brass band of the Field Band Foundation at 11h30. This is followed by an open-air performance of Dance For Youth at noon.

At 13h15, the new theatre complex at Godís Golden Acre will be opened officially. Entitled the Godís Golden Acre Young Zulu Warriors Theatre, the opening ceremony will be followed by the premiere of the Young Zulu Warriors in a production entitled Thulesizwe to be staged in the Theatre. The performance is free and all are welcome.

KZN Dance Link acknowledges funding from the Lotteries Distribution Fund for this production. The organisation is also supported in 2004 by The Playhouse Company and the KwaZulu Natal Arts and Culture Council.

Directions: Take the Cato Ridge exit off the N3, and follow signs to Highlands Resort. There will be DANCE FOR YOUTH banners to guide you.
