KZN DANCELINK AWARDS (article first published : 2004-10-15)

Every year the KZN dance community recognises excellence among its peers by hosting the annual KZN Dance Link Awards which will take place this year at the Catalina Theatre on October 25 at 18h00.

This significant event in the Durban dance diary is hosted by the active KZN Dance Link – a voluntary umbrella organisation created to develop, promote, nurture and support the active dance industry in this province. Previously known as the FNB Vita Dance Awards, this annual award applauds excellent dance makers and acknowledges emerging dance talent. A panel of respected judges includes Ashika Gangasagar; Lynne Goodman; Lynn Maree; Vusabantu Ngema; Vasugi Singh; Caroline Smart and Themi Venturas. The keynote speaker at the function will be Professor Pitika Ntuli, Executive Director of Organisational Culture and African Scholarship, UKZN, and co-director of the Standard Bank Awesome Africa Music Festival.

This year, the nominees in the Best Dancer category are: Siphele Nzama; Julie Moore; Welile Tembe; Musa Hlatshwayo; Louise Fracquet; Desiree Davids; Mdu Mtshali; Siyanda Duma; Thulebona Mzizi; Nellie Rushualang; Ntombi Gasa; Shiksha Rampatha; Linda Vargas; Denton Douglas and Angela Lardant. In the Best Choreographer category, the nominees are: David Gouldie; Jay Pather; Sbonakaliso Ndaba; Lliane Loots; Gerard Samuel and Sifiso Kweyama.

The nominees for Breakthrough/Newcomer: Woman are Magcino Shange; Zanele Sibisi; Thulile Bhengu; Marise Kyd; Caroline van Wyk; Suhana Gordhan; Dumisile Mgadi and Josette Eales. The nominees for Breakthrough/Newcomer: Man are Sanele Mzinyame; Stembiso Gcabashe; S’busiso Ngidi; Sifiso Khumalo; Mlekeleli Khuzwayo; Mxolisi Nkomonde; Trevor Sihlangu; Pascar Dube; Ignatius van Heerden and Sifiso Majola

A Special Award - The Abalalongi Award for services to dance in KZN - will be announced on the night.

There will be a Pay What You Can donation box at the door to cover the cost of the evening. The ceremony will be followed by snacks, with a cash bar.
