FNB DANCE UMBRELLA 2005 (article first published : 2004-09-26)

The FNB Dance Umbrella 2005 has announced the recipients of the two Grants of R40,000 and R10,000, respectively, as well as the commissioned choreographers.

The first grant of R40,000, will go towards the creation of a new work by Durban-based choreographer, Jay Pather. Like the previous work he presented at the FNB Dance Umbrella 2003 CityScapes, Pather will work in selected spaces within inner-city Johannesburg. His proposal suggests that he will move audiences from one location to another. The work will comprise several sections and each section will be made taking into account the particular architecture and space overlooking the city.

The second Grant of R10,000, which is open to young up-and-coming choreographers who have created at least two works in the past year has gone to Mdu Mtshali, who is also Durban-based. Mtshali plans to create a new work inspired by an arena, which is traditionally associated with sport with which he will create comparisons.

Other choreographers who have been commissioned for the FNB Dance Umbrella 2005 include, Boyzie Cekwana, Sbonakaliso Ndaba, Gregory Maqoma, PJ Sabbagha, Moeketsi Koena, Gerard Bester, Athena Mazarakis and Hlengiwe Lushaba. The FNB Dance Umbrella 2005 will also assist Cape Town-based Jazzart Dance Theatre and Tribhangi Dance Theatre to present works.

Aside from the above-mentioned commissioned work, the FNB Dance Umbrella invites choreographers to enter the festival, which is a free and open platform for new work.

Closing date for entries is October 15 and anyone interested in applying to present a work at the FNB Dance Umbrella 2005, should contact Jennifer on 011 482 5179.
