NEW DANCE FESTIVAL 2004 (article first published : 2004-07-23)

In partnership with the New Dance Festival in Johannesburg and PANSA, (the Performing Arts Network of South Africa) and the Africonnexions 2004 project, a satellite meeting will be held from August 16 to 21 at The Wits Theatre Complex in Gauteng.

Africonnexions was created at a meeting between dance practitioners held in Lisbon in 2002. Since then other meetings have been held internationally at least once a year.

As part of the 10 years Democracy in South Africa celebration, the meeting scheduled in Johannesburg will give a chance for overseas visitorís to visit artistic locations, and hold informal meetings with local organizers.

There will also be sessions in training on cultural management, and a special session on multinational African collaborations for dance development. This meeting will off an opportunity to further develop the North-South and South-South collaborations and artistic international practices.

The main issues that will be discussed between August 19 and 22 include a Pan African network which involves meeting with African partners about the project of building a Pan African network for contemporary dance.

European partners who have already built projects with South Africans will discuss the results of the collaborations. This includes Claire Verlet from Theatre de la Ville, Paris; Lene Thiesen from Denmark and Louise Jeffreys from the Barbican in London.

There will be workshops in arts administration. This will include creating a company, fund- raising ideas to retain a company with a stable support system. This will be presented by a representative of the International European Theatre Management.

Dance practitioners are invited to attend the meetings. To register, contact 011 482 4140 or 011 482 5179.
