HOLES IN THE HEART (article first published : 2004-07-10)

Phenduka Dance Theatre is to present the premiére of their newest work, Holes in the Heart, in the Playhouse Loft Theatre from July 21 to 25.

This full-length choreographic work is created and directed by award-winning choreographer, Sbonakaliso Ndaba, winner of the 2003 DaimlerChrysler Award for South African choreography.

Following hot on the heels of their highly successful run of Head First at The Loft last year, hailed by critics as … “a wonderful performance” ...”‘exciting and innovative dance” ... Phenduka returns to The Loft and Durban audiences can once again look forward to more of this exciting company’s unique style and captivating energy.

“In part an exploration of life in informal settlements, Holes in the Heart questions the power we hold over our own destinies, while reinforcing that we should still hold ourselves responsible for where life leads us. It is, after all, our choices which lead us down one path or another,” says Sbonakaliso Ndaba.

“We trace a young girl’s journey to womanhood and the choices she makes along the way – because of her own experiences and those that she is witness to. She longs for each day to pass and for the next one to arrive. Not for the joy that the next day may bring but so that she will leave her childhood behind and no longer be silenced or subject to the decisions and demands of others.

“She does not make the same choices as those who came before her and, because of this, her life takes a different shape. Perhaps not always as she had hoped but certainly according to her choices.”

An exciting musical score weaves together with innovative and energetic choreography, to create a patchwork quilt of a woman’s life, and daily life in informal settlements.

From the haunting sounds and scenes of a waking informal settlement to the high energy of Sophiatown-inspired jives, cutting edge contemporary dance and the exuberance of the company, Holes in the Heart is the poignant and captivating story of an old woman looking back on her life, and the experiences which shaped her.

Holes in the Heart promises a thought-provoking and entertaining evening of innovative, daring dance packed with Phenduka Dance Theatre’s trademark vibrancy and vitality.

Performances are at 19h00 from July 21 to 24 with a bonus matinee at 15h00 on July 24 and the final performance on July 25 is at 18h00. Tickets R30.

There will be special schools performances at 15h00 on July 22, 23 and 24 followed by a question and answer session. Tickets R10 for students and scholars.

Book at Computicket or call the Playhouse box office on 031 369 9444.

The production has been made possible thanks to the support of the National Arts Council.
