PLAYHOUSE PLANS (article first published : 2004-06-3)

The Playhouse Company's Artistic Director, Linda Bukhosini, has been fully occupied putting in motion planning activities on the company's arts front. Following advertisements inviting proposals from independent arts companies and individuals to present productions for possible presentation in association with The Playhouse Company, more than 100 submissions were received. These are in the final process of selection.

Hip Kulcha, a one-day youth festival, will be presented by the company on June 12. Fun activities for children will be held in The Playhouse's Porte Cochere (front entrance) area, as well as in The Grand Foyer. This free morning programme for children will be run from 10h00 to 13h00 and will include clowns, face-painting, balloon-sculpting and story-telling.

Following this, the Youth Council of South Africa will hold a Youth Conference in the Loft Theatre starting at 15h00, focusing on arts and culture-related topics, as well as educational issues such as HIV AIDS and the Youth, Voting, and others.

Forming part of June's Celebrate Youth Month, the day will culminate in a bumper Hip Kulcha concert in The Opera starting at 19h00. This will feature two star acts with strong appeal for youth audiences, namely the hip hop group, The Squatter Camp, and the kwaito group, Malaika.

Krijay Govender will double as the evening's comedian and compère, and will share the latter role with Ukhozi fm's Linda Sibiya who commands a huge youth listenership. Tickets for this evening concert are R55. Booking is through Computicket or on 031 369 9444.

Further down the line, The Playhouse Company will launch two competitions which will be linked to and culminate in the company's annual Women's Arts Festival in August. The one competition will focus on the “Girl Child” in the context of our past decade of democracy. Girls of 10 years of age will be able to enter a poetry competition telling what the past decade has meant to them. The ten winning submissions will be bound and read at the Women's Arts Festival.

The other women's related competition, also linked to ten years of democracy as a theme, will be held as fabric artists' joust. Entrants will use a square metre of fabric as a parameter on which they may quilt, bead, paint or apply recyclable material. The winning ten crafted items will be joined as one large wall-hanging, and will be displayed in the Playhouse for the rest of the year.

Further details regarding The Playhouse Company's Women's Arts Festival as well as other performance events will be released shortly.
