DANCEXPLOSION (article first published : 2004-04-27)

Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre presents DanceXplosion - a varied and exciting dance programme for high school learners which will tour the province between May 3 and 14.

In true Siwela Sonke style, the programme features high entertaining and visually exciting dancing - a cross cultural programme of dance as well as dance that deals with important social issues. DanceXplosion includes three dance works choreographed by Siwela Sonke’s award winning artistic director, Jay Pather.

The programme opens with Kick Off – a fast paced comical dance work based on the game of soccer. The various stages of the game itself will be depicted. The dance shows the relationship between the physicality of sport and the physicality of dance with bouncing balls, soccer jerseys and pantsula and kwaito mixed with contemporary dance.

The programme then moves into a serious aspect of society – the increasing physical and verbal violence inflicted on women – with Unclenching the Fist. This portrays the roots of violence against women in a violent society and offers hope and advice to learners who may witness such abuse.

The Power Of One, the final work, lifts the mood with an exciting "conversation" between gumboot dancers and the bells of Indian dance. This leads into a medley of various dance forms – traditional Zulu, Shembe, classical ballet, classical Indian as well as contemporary and jazz for a resounding climax. This work was performed for the World Social Forum in Mumbai, India in January and for a conference of African leaders at the Sandton Convention Centre in February.

The show runs for 50 minutes and performances will be held between May 3 and 14. Times can be negotiated. The cost is R5 per learner (minimum of 200 learners). Ideally a hall with a stage is required and the company will bring their own sound system. Payment is due on the date of performance. Bookings through Nicosha on 031 307 6685.
