BALLETTO JULIO ACEVEDO (article first published : 2004-01-13)

Ballette Julio Acevedo – a newly formed professional dance company – will perform for the first time at the Playhouse on January 31. The premiere is a triple bill - Requiem with music by Mozart; Pavanne-Bolero with music by Maurice Ravel; and On the Run with music by Yello.

It’s an exciting, mixed programme to please both dance connoisseurs and audiences not usually drawn to classical ballet. The focus is the purity of dance – strong technique and real passion, a combination of classical discipline and Latin flair. It’s about music and line and movement, not excessive costume and other paraphernalia.

Balletto had their first appearance at the Baxter Theatre Cape Town in September 2003. Having an incredible response from the audience, they decided to take this production on a nationwide tour.

Julio hails from Santiago, Chile, where he graduated from the National Ballet Theatre. He won a scholarship to Houston Ballet, Texas, and then danced Principal roles in the Opera House in Santiago. He was then invited to dance throughout South America. South Africa and Europe. During his time spent in Europe, he had the privilege to dance for the Royal family in Norway and share the stage with famous personalities such as Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Tanya Acevedo is a native Capetonian. She met Julio when they were both dancing in Durban. She followed him to Germany, where the pair went to work at Opera Houses in Chemnitz, Berlin and Dresden. There they were hailed for their strong technique and passionate dancing, becoming an inseparable partnership in romantic roles. They have danced together in Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, Norway, Sweden and Holland and were also invited by the Russians All Star to take part in their tour to USA in 1998.

Just when Tanya was being hailed as Europe’s young star (1998), the Acevedo’s decided to relocate to South Africa and start a family. They now run the International Dance School in Lakeside, Cape Town, where they cultivate the Vaganova and French style of dance.

There are two performances at the Playhouse on January 31: a matinee at 14h00 (tickets R45 or R25 for block bookings of 10 or more persons) and an evening show (R55). Doors will open for the Matinee at 13h00 to allow young dance lovers to watch the dancers warming up. Booking at Computicket.
