PLAYHOUSE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OFFICIAL GPR (article first published : 2003-12-20)

As a follow-up to an earlier story on artSMart, this is the official press release from The Playhouse Company (The Playhouse) regarding its appointment of Linda Bukhosini as Artistic Director.

Based in Durban, The Playhouse was recently re-constituted and declared by the National Government as a Cultural Institution. It has formed a Council (Board) of highly regarded business and community leaders who are determined to ensure that the Playhouse adheres to the highest standards of Corporate governance and contributes meaningfully to Arts, Culture, Education and Development in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal.

The Chairman of The Playhouse Council, Ms Mina Lesoma, an experienced and respected member of the Executive Committee of the City of Durban since 1998, said “The Council is delighted with the appointment of Ms Bukhosini and it has confidence in her abilities to assist The Playhouse in its mandate and objectives of, among others, to develop and promote the performing arts and to encourage excellence, understanding and enjoyment of the performing arts”. Ms Lesoma further said that “in particular, the Council is satisfied that the appointment process was transparent and fair.

Mr Bongani Tembe, who is a member of Council and a partner of Ms Bukhosini, recused himself from the appointment process at least five months before the first interview so as to avoid any potential of a conflict of interest”.

Another prominent member of the new Playhouse Council and interviewing panel, Honourable Justice Leona Theron of the Supreme Court said, “Members of the interviewing panel agreed that Linda Bukhosini is confident and has the necessary skills and experience required to fill the important position of Artistic Director. It was felt that she has integrity and that her vision for The Playhouse is a dynamic one”.

Professor Caesar Ndlovu, Managing Director of The Playhouse, added “I have known Linda for years and look forward to working with her and to her contribution to The Playhouse Company”.

Linda Bukhosini is a highly regarded Arts Administrator and an excellent performer who holds a Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. She has served the South African arts community with distinction over the past nine years.

Previously she held the positions of Corporate Affairs Executive and Director of Arts, Education and Development at The Playhouse Company until year 2000.

Among her many achievements at The Playhouse she started the Is’cathamiya Festival and served as Director of the National Women’s Arts Festival; she promoted a variety of genres of music, dance and drama. She is currently the Chairman of the Music panel of the National Arts Council of South Africa and is also the Chairman of the Norwegian/South African Music Education programme. She serves as an adjudicator of the National Choir Festival and has been closely associated with eThekwini Municipality’s “Celebrate Durban” over the past two years.
