DR NEVILLE (article first published : 2003-11-21)

Neville Letard, respected Durban ballroom and Latin American dance teacher and co-originator of the popular Shall We Dance annual dance showcase, received a surprise honour bestowed on him by the University of Natal recently.

Neville received a “Full Blue – Honoris Causa” which is the highest honour that the University can bestow for outstanding achievement and sportsmanship. Neville was acknowledged for his role in heading the Varsity Dance Club – which he has been doing since 1991.

“It is a great achievement. The dance club has always been incredibly motivated and active in the varsity and inter-varsity circles and we wanted this success to be publicly acknowledged. We were delighted when the UND Sports Club decided to make the honour,” said varsity dancer and Shall We Dance regular Mickey Chasomers who handed Neville the award during the Varsity and Social ballroom dance club’s recent Annual Ball. Neville received a certificate, a tie and pocket badge.

Neville has been dancing since 1960 and teaching since 1976. His passion and commitment to promote ballroom dance in this province is well known and documented. Many hundreds of students have been taught by Neville over the years at school, varsity and social levels.

His many pupils join the Varsity in applauding Neville for his years of service and commitment to the Durban dance community and are already dubbing him as “Dr Nev”.

“It’s a pity that I can’t really help people with their pains and fever – but I can give advice on a double chassis reverse turn!” he responds with a smile.
