DIT AWARDS (article first published : 2003-11-18)

The Durban Institute of Technology’s department of drama studies recently held its Awards Ceremony 2003. During the year departmental productions included The Tempest, Ntsikana, Exodus, Show Boat and I closed my eyes to stop the sky from falling. Award winners are featured below.

Best Actor: joint winners Andile Mngadi (The Tempest) and Sthembiso Mbatha (Showboat). Best Actress: Tasha-Lee Reddy (Prospero - The Tempest) and Zanele Mzolo (Magnolia - Showboat)

Best Supporting Actor: Wesley Woolf (Caliban - The Tempest) and Tommy Kyd (Cpt. Andy - Showboat) and Best Supporting Actress: Thandeka Malinga (Parthy - Showboat) and Ayanda Jwara (Ellie - Showboat).

The best director award was shared by Wesley Woolf (Dirty Visions) and Thulile Mahaba (Beast)

Best Male Dancer: Sduduzo Majola; Best Female Dancer: Thulile Mahlaba and Most Improved Dancer: Wesley Woolf.

Best Male Singer: Sthembiso Mbatha; Best Female Singer: Sthembile Cele and Most Improved Singer: Siphesihle Zondi.

The Educational Theatre Award went to Ayanda Tsotsi with the Leadership Award being shared by Sikumbule Mqomboti and Andile Mngadi.

Most Creative Male and Female Performers were Andile Mngadi and Nondumiso Mfeka. Most Versatile Male and Female Performance awards went to Sthembiso Mbatha and jointly to Ayanda Tsotsi and Thandeka Malinga.

Acknowledged for Outstanding Performance in a Cameo Role: Sifiso Ntozake (Stefano - The Tempest); Menzi Biyela (Trinculo - The Tempest); Thabani Zuma (Ntsikana); Hlengiwe Ncube (Queenie - Showboat); Siphesihle Zondi (Alonso - The Tempest/ Joe - Showboat); Ayanda Tsotsi (Julie - Showboat); David Steyn (Steve - Showboat); Victor Ndawo (Mr Green - Showboat) and Lisa Venediger (Landlady - Showboat).

Creative Achievement Awards for Scriptwriting went to Jabulani Mfeka (Tear Drop), Sthembiso Mbatha (Seeing Through a Dog's Eye), and Sthembile Cele (Freedom is Relative). Awards for Poetry in I close my eyes to stop the sky from falling went to Wesley Woolf; Andile Mngadi; Lisa Venediger; Pascar Dube; Menzi Biyela and Thomas Mpoeleng. The award for Costume Design went to Tommy Kyd (Dirty Visions and I closed my eyes to stop the sky from falling).

Academic Awards went to 1st Year - Vukile Mavuye; 2nd Year - Sifiso Ntozake, and 3rd year - Wesley Woolf. Awards for Stage Management went to Thomas Mpoeleng and Sibusiso Mbatha with Backstage Assistance to Sthembiso Mbatha.

Awards for Dedication & Professionalism went to Sduduzo Majola, Siphesihle Zondi; Nondumiso Mfeka; Sifiso Ntozake; Carla Grove; Lerato Msiwe; Lynn Mbatha; Bhekani Biyela; Nomfezeko Mjara; Nontobeko Mbatha and Teakshania Chetty.
