DANCE IN ACTION 2003 (article first published : 2003-10-18)

Dance In Action 2003 is the annual dance and physical theatre performance evening presented by the University of Natal’s department of drama which involves almost every student in the programme. Ranging from first year students through to the third year dance majors, Dance In Action promises to be a magical evening of dance underneath the stars.

The first year students travel through the ideas of ritual dance drama and ritual performance and, in works choreographed by members of the Flatfoot Dance Company, stage a celebration of The Four Elements.

Second year students take up the idea of Australian Aboriginal spiritual dreamlines and dream-walkings and create a journey into the heartland of the spirit; all strangely familiar to South African traditional rituals. Look out for some beautiful live singing and didgeridoo playing!

Third year dance majors have collaborated with Lliane Loots to create a journey into the head and heart of relating and communicating. Titled, into the heart we dive, this workshopped dance theatre work is, like life, about a series of meetings and partings.

The finale for the evening is a spectacular new work in which Lliane Loots has collaborated with Flatfoot Dance Company, Flatfoot Student Company, Siyagijima (Flatfoot’s Kwa-Mashu youth dance project) and the UND’s Capoeira club. Bringing together nearly 30 dancers, this work celebrates (and pays homage) to the music of Prince. Entitled Prince and the ‘real’ Power Generation, this work is a witty and sparkling dance extravaganza that shows off the training and talent of some of KZN up and coming dancers from all of Flatfoot’s 2003 projects. Choreographing alongside her Flatfoot Dance Company members for this work, Loots promises that audiences will laugh and gasp at the sheer exhilaration of the dancing moving body!

Dance in Action 2003 takes place at the Open Air Theatre at the University of Natal on October 24 or 25 at 19h00. Contact Claudette Wagner on 031 260 3134 (between 09h00 and 12h30).
