DANCE UBUNTU (article first published : 2003-09-26)

Held last month in the Playhouse Opera before a highly appreciative audience, Dance Ubuntu was a spectacular dance programme presented by the Indian Academy of South Africa.

It featured over 200 dancers from 16 dance schools who presented items in the five Indian linguistic groups as well as Zulu, Irish, Portuguese, Punjabi and Scottish dance numbers.

Cllr. Logie Naidoo, Deputy Mayor, eThekwini Municipality paid a warm compliment to the Indian Academy for putting together Dance Ubuntu so splendidly.

“I was simply astounded at the huge turnout and the reception the various items drew,” says IASA director Dr TP Naidoo. “Most of the participants were thrilled at the interaction they enjoyed with the various dance groups and communities.

“I personally think that Dance Ubuntu has a tremendous future on the cultural calendar. We are already scouting around for dance groups and folk items from the larger variety of communities in South Africa. It is a wonderful opportunity to unite our people using the arts as a vehicle for bonding our nation. Thanks to the eThekwini Municipality and The Playhouse Company.”

Anyone wishing to put their dance works forward for the next Dance Ubuntu should contact the Indian Academy on 031 400 2725.
