KZN DANCE AWARDS (article first published : 2003-09-10)

KZN Dance Link is an umbrella organisation for all forms of dance in KZN. Already celebrating that range of dance through Imbumba and its offer to children of dance workshops in all styles, KZN Dance Link also offers dance opportunities to youth through Dance for Youth, an annual event celebrating Youth Day.

The organisation has announced the launch of Dance Awards designed to honour the province’s experienced and talented dancers and choreographers, and add to efforts for the furtherance of their creativity and excellence.

In 2002, the last year of FNB sponsorship of the awards, KZN DanceLink was awarded an FNB Vita Award for Special Services to Dance in KZN. That monetary prize was put towards the new Awards, and KZN DanceLink has been fund-raising, and budgeting and spending carefully, in order to swell the amount available. Anyone wishing to make further donations to the Awards Fund is encouraged to contact Lynn Maree at KZN DanceLink.

The KZN DanceLink Durban Dance Awards will be launched at a celebratory function at the NSA Gallery as part of Celebrate Durban, on September 22 at 18h00. There will be food, dancing, and video footage of the fabulous work made in 2002/2003. At that event the judges will be introduced.

The Awards, the first of which will take place in September 2004 will comprise Dancer of the Year, and Choreographer of the Year, in both of which the body of work produced over the year will be taken into account, as well as two Newcomer awards: one for men and one for women. Also included is an award for “contribution to dance over the year”.

Judging for 2004 began at Jomba! in August and all dancers and dance companies who wish their work to be seen by the judges need to ensure that information about performance(s) are sent at least one month in advance to Peter Taylor by fax 031 209 0142 or email: flyingfish@mweb.co.za

This information needs to include date, time, venue, and the names of choreographers and performers in the performance. The year runs from Jomba! 2003 to the mid-August 2004 when the judges will meet to make their decisions. Judges need to be able to contact the organisers and book two free tickets for the performance of their choice.

Contact KZN DanceLink by mail at PO Box 17058, Congella, 4013, South Africa or phone 031 206 1696 or fax 031 205 0568.
