MICHAEL GREEN (article first published : 1999-09-11)

Michael Green, one of South Africa’s best-known journalists, has written about wine in the Press for the past 17 years. Before his retirement as a full-time journalist, he worked on newspapers for 45 years, 20 of them as editor-in-chief of The Friend (Bloemfontein), The Daily News (Durban) and the Sunday Tribune (Durban).

He studied music at the University of Cape Town and in 1967-68 attended Harvard University in the United States as a Nieman Fellow. His daughter, Pippa Green, who is deputy editor of the Sunday Independent, Johannesburg, was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard for 1998-99. Having lived at the Cape for the early part of his career, Michael Green grew up with wine. He has done wine courses but he says his main qualification for writing on this subject is personal consumption! He reckons that over the past half-century he has disposed of about 15 000 bottles of wine!

artSMart is proud to welcome Michael Green to its pages and hopes the association will be long and successful, in the true spirit of the grape!

(You’ll find Michael Green’s Wine Notes on Supper Theatre at the moment but they will soon be moved to a new Leisure section which will be introduced soon.)
