OFF AXIS (article first published : 2003-06-9)

Prolific, passionate, profound and poetic – the Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company is staging a season featuring work by four award-winning South African choreographers at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on campus from June 20 aptly titled Off Axis.

It features the choreography of Christopher Kindo,. Robyn Orlin, Mark Hawkins and David Gouldie.

Off Axis follows hot on the heels of the spectacular Grass Gardens and promises to be thought-provoking dance theatre at its best. Having toured South Africa extensively and undertaken international tours, Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company has earned the reputation of being an innovative and versatile dance company during its five years of existence.

As the title Off Axis suggests, this season of cutting edge contemporary work aims to invoke and deal with contentious issues around sexuality, gender and the politics of the body. David Gouldie, Robyn Orlin, Mark Hawkins and Christopher Kindo’s work engages highly visual and contrasting imagery ensuring that even the most sceptical audience member will be left enthralled and intoxicated by the work presented by these exciting choreographers. This is a unique opportunity for students to interact and discover dance at its fullest potential.

Black Tide by Christopher Kindo was first performed by Full Circle Dance Centre at 2001 FNB Vita Dance Indaba in Cape Town and invited to the FNB Vita Dance Umbrella, Johannesburg, 2002.

That’s The Way The Cookie Crumbles was first performance by The Playhouse Dance Company in June 1996 and will be performed by the FFFDC for the first time this season. It is designed and choreographed by the visionary Robyn Orlin. FFFDC is very excited to be working with Robyn Orlin who recently won the Sir Laurence Olivier Award for her Outstanding Achievement in Dance.

Just Remember To Smile – a New Age Circus is a premiere designed and choreographed by FFDC resident choreographer David Gouldie.

Finally, Excerpts from a Ballerina’s Life – Part II was first performed by FFFDC at this year’s Dance Umbrella in Johannesburg in March 2003. It is choreographed by Mark Hawkins with video art by David Gouldie and examines “.... richness, poorness, happiness, sickness, health ... until death do we part.”

Performances are at 19h30 on June 21 and from June 24 to 29. Tickets R60 (R45 pensioners, students, scholars on presentation of relevant card). There will be three schools performances on June 25, 26 and 27 at 11h00.

More information from Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company on tel/fax 031 209 0142. The FFFDC is supported by the National Arts Council.
