SASAD FESTIVAL 2003 (article first published : 2003-06-9)

The Society for the Advancement of Dancing (SASAD) is to stage a Festival of Dance 2003. Now taking place every two years, the Festival is competitive and will provide colourful varied programmes in the dance forms, namely tap, ballet, modern and dance orientated acrobatics. Children from all walks of life and communities trained by qualified teachers from several local dance studios will compete for bursaries and the coveted prestigious trophies in the abovementioned categories. The winning candidates are awarded on the Gala evening.

This year the Society has once again forged ahead in its aim to forward dance as an art form by inviting Ms Barbara Mullen from Boston, USA to adjudicate. A highly qualified teacher and choreographer in all forms of dance, Ms Mullen has once again offered a bursary for a pupil of member teacher to attend a summer school in Mexico and take class in both Boston and the Alvin Ailey Academy in New York. The Society is fully sponsoring the winning candidate.

Three dancers were selected from the Semi Finals at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre to go forward to the Finals. They were Corrine de Beer, Lauren Salt and Michaela Griffin. The final selection is to be made by Ms Mullen, who will adjudicate the variations to be performed by the dancers at the Festival. The result will be announced at the Gala evening.

The Society acknowledges Mark Hawkins and David Gouldie of Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company for their generous contemporary bursary of R500 to be awarded to both a senior and junior dancer.

The Festival is to be held at the Westville Civic Centre from the afternoon of June 27 to July 10. The three sessions per day include: morning sessions at 09h00; afternoon sessions at 14h00, and evening sessions at 18h30. Tickets R6 (R4 pensioners/students) with season tickets at R150 (R120 for pensioners) at the door.
