DANCE FOR YOUTH (article first published : 2003-06-9)

KZN Dance Link presents Dance for Youth, a large-scale youth dance performance for Youth Day to be held on June 15 at God's Golden Acre, Khayelihle, in Cato Ridge.

The production is led by Phenduka Dance Theatre. Performers are drawn from Shwibeka Dance Ensemble, Cato Manor Vibe!, Leftfeet FIRST, Hlanganani Traditional Orchestra, God's Golden Acre: Khayelihle, Durban Children's Home, Nateshwar Dance Company, Uyaba Dance Company, Phenduka Training Programme and Lecia Hale.

The production celebrates the achievements of the youth of South Africa in 1976, looks at the hopes raised since, the difficulties experienced in taking hold of our new opportunities such as HIV/AIDS, poverty and child abuse, and the optimism experienced as each supports the other.

God's Golden Acre is a very beautiful "resort" set in the hills of Cato Ridge. It is home to around 80 young children and babies, as well as the centre from which over 700 people in the valley are fed and supported as AIDS bites deep into families.

Dance For Youth starts at 14h00. Take a picnic or buy food from the food stalls, browse around the craft stalls and walk in the grounds in the perfect winter air. The performance is free and will include choirs and bands.

From Durban, take the Cato Ridge exit off the N3, turn left at the top, and follow signs to Highlands Resort, The Youth Day celebrations will be advertised along the way! From Pietermaritzburg take the Cato Ridge exit off the N3, turn right over the motorway, and follow signs.

Funding for the project comes from the National Lotteries Distribution Fund.
