THE ORION PROJECT (article first published : 2003-05-20)

The Orion Project is a brand new dance theatre work that navigates the interface between contemporary dance, video installation and text. Created for the ten powerful resident Flatfoot dancers, this work is a delving into the head and heart of post-apartheid South Africa.

“Full of dissident wit and irony, The Orion Project keeps asking us to reflect not only on our own history but also on the paths not taken and the journeys forgotten,” says FNB Vita award winning choreographer Lliane Loots who has also written the piece.

“The work begins with a radical re-reading of the myth of Orion and the huntress Artemis ... as we begin to question the impact of the constellations in being our points of navigation. Images of salmon swimming up-stream, 18th and 19th Century African slavery, and a white girl caught in a detention cell in apartheid South Africa, all seamlessly come togther is in a work that speaks of grace and redemption.”

Lliane Loots has just been awarded the prestigious Philip Stein Grant to make a new work for the FNB Vita Dance Umbrella In Johannesburg for 2004. This grant is awarded to two choreographers in South Africa each year.

The Orion Project is also a collaborative work with two of Durban's top fine artists Virginia MacKenny and carol-anne gainer. MacKenny is well known for her exquisite painting and, more recently, her video work for dance with choreographers such as Jay Pather. carol-anne gainer is well known for her challenging performance art and video work; this is her first video art for dance. She created the brilliant and ferocious burning star image in a work that Loots choreographed for the Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company.

Set design is by Mervyn McMurtry with lighting design by Julian August.

Performances take place from May 20 to 24 at 19h00 in the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. Tickets R30 (R20 students). Book at Computicket.
