EQ IN DANCE (article first published : 2003-04-25)

The buzz phrase in employment these days is not so much IQ but EQ – in other words, the emotional capacity of an employee rather than his or her intellence capacity. Is the encumbent for a job capable of handling stress, interacting with colleagues or the public, capable of taking the strain of a busy work schedule and so forth? These are questions employers are now asking over and above the applicant’s academic qualifications, business achievement or work experience.

As from May, Fern Girdlestone-Houdet will be introducing EQ in Movement and Dance for children from five to ten years. Lessons will be held at the Durban Music School in St Andrew’s Street and an introductory fee of R100 will be offered for the first term.

EQ in Dance is a form of educational dance which focuses on building self-discovery and self-awareness. These are the first steps to developing self-esteem and social competency. It is based on natural movements and therefore is not a technical form such as ballet, jazz or folk dance and is enjoyed just as much by youngsters of both sexes.

The lessons encourage exploration, expression and creativity and develop not only co-ordination and readiness skills for reading, writing and analytical thinking but also communication, decision making and problem solving skills. Apart from encouraging personal development, EQ in Dance is primarily an enjoyable dance form for young people.

With over 20 years of experience in teaching dance in Sweden and as a qualified Montessori and Swedish pre-school and dance teacher focusing on teaching for understanding, Fern welcomes all new pupils. No dance experience is necessary.

Registration and more information on other EQ courses and workshops for children, parents, teachers and caregivers which do not involve movement, contact Fern on tel/Fax 031 208 5452 or 084 779 1848. Or email: mauraiceh@mplanet.co.za
